Re: In Defense of Citi Field and The Wilpons

Your column is nothing more than a diatribe that demeans and insults Mets fans who have every right to be angry at what was built in Queens. If I were any more cynical, I would say that Fred Wilpon paid you to write this.
You talk about the inferiority complex Mets fans seem to have when it comes to the Yankees. This is understandable when one realizes this is considered a Yankees town. Mets fans are far outnumbered, and no matter what their team does, they always seem to play second fiddle to the Yankees in the local sports media.
Am I jealous of the Yankees right now? I guess you can say I am. I'm jealous of the fact that the Yankees have a beautiful brand new stadium that honors and celebrates their teams' history. The Mets have a new stadium that honors and celebrates some other teams' history.
I truly believe that in his heart, Fred Wilpon wishes he owned the Dodgers, but since they weren't available, the Mets would have to do. He just decided he would do what he could to mold the Mets into the image of the team he really wanted. Wilpon was going to build his shrine to the Dodgers and Mets fans be damned.
I do believe that the current Mets management has little regard for Mets history and the big brouhaha caused by Dwight Gooden having the nerve to write his signature on the wall of the Ebbets Club was proof of that. They considered this graffiti and intended to erase it. Fortunately, after word got out, the outcry from fans was so great, management actually heard them and decided they would keep it, moving it to another location. Speaking of the Ebbets Club, was that name really necessary? We have an entire ballpark that looks like Ebbets Field. Did they need to to give the club that name too? I think the "Bill Shea Club" or just the "Shea Club" have a better ring to it. And speaking of Bill Shea, is there any acknowledgement of him anywhere in the park? Someone please tell me if I missed it, because I didn't see anything when I was there. After all, Bill Shea is just the man who brought National League Baseball back to New York City, but I guess that fact is lost on Fred Wilpon.
You claim to have seen a story back in 2006 that talked about plans to build a Mets museum. Not that I don't believe you, but I'd like to see this story for myself. If they were talking about this museum as far back as 3 years ago, well then, where is it? We are well into the season, the ballpark is complete, but construction on this museum hasn't even started yet. I didn't hear any talk of a museum until fans started complaining. And where will this museum be located? Certainly not in the rotunda. I'm sure Fred would not allow anything Mets related to infringe upon the space already taken up by Jackie Robinson and his beloved Dodgers. No, as I understand it, this museum will be behind the food stands, somewhere beyond the outfield walls, tacked on like an afterthought where relatively few fans will ever see it, unless the're willing to take the hike. Mets history may not be as extensive as Yankees history, but it deserves to be displayed no less prominently in a ballpark that was supposedly built for them.
I could go on and on about individual players and periods in Mets history that deserved better treatment then Wilpon was willing to give them, but I don't want to bore you.
Contrary to what you believe, Mets fans will not come to love Citifield. What they will do is come to accept that fact that this is what they are stuck with and there's nothing they can do to change it.
I'm sure the Dodgers will feel right at home when they come to play in Queens.
