What’s the mystery? Heilman’s performance is not really new. Last year, Aaron Heilman won the Mets bullpen under achievement award for blowing a total of 7 games. In those games, Aaron gave up the lead and left with the score tied or with the Mets trailing. There were other games where the Mets were already trailing but Heilman could not stop the opposition from tacking on runs. So to me, what we are seeing is not abnormal. I’ve referred to Heilman as the Teflon reliever because for some reason he seems to be touted for more talent than he has shown.
Aaron Heilman came up a few years ago through the Mets organization. He was a starter and did start a few games, one in particular in 2005 when he pitched brilliantly in a shut out performance. Shortly after, he was moved to the bullpen. It was determined by Rick Peterson and others in the organization that his stuff was best suited as a setup man to closer Braden Looper. That’s been his role ever since except now he sets up Billy Wagner. But his primary role has been to give Mets fans agita.
It’s no secret that Aaron Heilman wants to be a starter. He has stated that for a long time. Perhaps its time he does start. Seriously, maybe this is the guy the Mets have been looking for to fill in until Pedro comes back. At the very least, the Mets could see if there is any value left in Heilman. The truth is, the Mets better think about moving Heilman while there are still GMs interested before it’s too late.
So the .500 Mets attempt to end the home stand on a winning note. If they lose today they will have gone 3-4 against two last place teams in the National League. For every game they play well, they follow with a stinker. There is no magic in this team. No come back, no never say die attitude we saw in 2006 and last year prior to June 1. Since they it’s been .500 city. Look around the division last night.
You can’t fault the Wilpons either. A 140 million dollar commitment should produce a team capable of playing better than just a couple games over .500. The talent is certainly there. Something has got to change.
