I would hope the Mets seriously consider trading Jorge Sosa or even releasing him. He has been a failure and now it’s time for him to be moved. There has to be a team willing to take a shot at him even if the Mets must eat part of his contract. The Mets simply can’t send Joe Smith down. He has done a fine job in the pen and sending him down just because he has options is just plain wrong. What message would that send to the fans or even to the players for that matter? It doesn’t matter if you screw up as long as you are making a huge salary you are safe. That’s what the message would be if the Mets send down Smith and keep Sosa.

Maybe some of the under achieving veterans need to see just that. A player, like Sosa, being shipped out for not performing. And a player like Smith, young and affordable, being kept for his good performance. The Mets would not get much for Sosa, but anyone, even at the lowest levels of the minor leagues would be preferable.

The Nelson Figueroa experiment must come to an end too. Look, it was a great story. Brooklyn’s own travels the globe, doesn’t give up his dream, wins first game with Mets. I’m sure some day it will make a fine baseball movie. But the Mets are not about good stories. They are, according to COO Jeff Wilpon, about winning and doing everything possible to win. At least move Figueroa to the pen. Rumor has it that Claudio Vargas will be called up to pitch tomorrow night. If that’s the case Figueroa is most likely out. I’m sure Vargas would get a few shots at starting.

Jeff Keppinger would sure look good at second base for the Mets wouldn’t he? The Cincinnati infielder had 7 hits in a row this weekend. He’s off to a fine year so far and he’s young. Gee, I wonder what organization he came out of. I know it wasn’t the Reds. Hmm, that club must be kicking themselves for not giving the youngster a shot. Well I know the Mets wouldn’t be so stupid with one of their young players.

The .500 saga just keeps on rolling at Shea. The Mets just cannot seem to win more than 2 in a row. Its two steps forward and two steps back. Last night’s game was a total embarrassment. I know on any given day, the worst team can beat the best team. But this home stand is against two last place teams in the National League and after 4 games, the Mets are 2-2. As I said, the Mets are nothing more than a .500 team, at least so far.

The Mets have set their rotation so that Santana, Perez, and Maine will pitch against the Yankees this weekend. The Yankees will counter with Rasner, Pettitte, and Wang. Even with no A-Rod and Posada, I wouldn’t start counting chickens. The Mets have never swept the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The Mets have only won the series at the Stadium once and that was in 2005. This will be the last time the Mets play regular season games at Yankee Stadium since the Yankees are moving into a new ballpark too next season.

At the momment, every minor league team of the Mets is under .500. The New Orleans Zephyrs are the only club above .500 and that is by 1 game.
