Although Pelfrey and the bullpen imploded on Saturday, the Mets won the series. In doing so the Mets got off to an excellent start during this rough home stand. The Brewers came in to Shea Stadium with the best record in the National League. The Mets then took 2 of 3 with some outstanding pitching and timely hitting.

The Brewers are having a season somewhat like the Mets had last year. Last year the Mets played great while the rest of the division took one on the chin. That’s pretty much the situation presented to the Brewers this season. Milwaukee (25-12) currently leads the second place Astros by 7 games. The Brewers are the only team in the Central over .500.

Meanwhile, the 2007 Mets after 36 games have an identical record as their 2006 counterparts (23-13). Last year at this time, the Mets led the Phillies by 2 games while this year they trail the Braves by a half game. The Braves were 6 games behind at this point last year.

I like the look of the outfield yesterday with rookie Carlos Gomez in right and Endy Chavez in left. For one game the Mets had quite some speed in the outfield. Gomez could be a wonderful player for the Mets but at age 21 all anyone can say is that it will take some time before we really know his capabilities. Right now he’s got a lot of raw talent. He’s as fast as Jose Reyes. Can you imagine having two of these types of players?

Sending Mike Pelfrey to New Orleans was the best thing for him. He needs to relax, regroup, and refocus. He has to figure out that his stuff is good enough to make it in the big leagues although his slider does need some refinement. Pelfrey has the talent; hopefully working down at triple A will give him an opportunity to make baseball fun again.

Cliff Floyd returns to Shea tonight as the Cubs come in for a four game series. The Cubs have played better of late but are a game under .500 and in third place in the National League Central. Cliff is batting .274 with 2 homeruns and 13 RBI’s. Tom Glavine (4-1) faces right hander Jason Marquis who is 5-1 with a 1.70ERA. In his last outing Marquis pitched a complete came shut out over the Pirates winning 1-0. He has won 5 decisions in a row. Glavine won his last start Tuesday night in San Francisco. The win was the 294th of his career.
