What a long game. I can't believe that I stayed up that late considering I do have to get up and go to work. How in the world did Jose Reyes hit that ball off of his shoe tops in the eighth inning? They busted him all night with curve balls then he adjusted and hit it out with a 7 iron. Truly amazing. Give credit to the Mets bullpen. They collectively are the player of the game in my book but of course a nod to Carlos Beltran for allowing me to go to sleep.

The Mets always seem to get involved in some long extra inning games. The longest of course, in innings, was in St. Louis when they played a 25 inning marathon that the Mets lost by a score of 1 to nothing. Here are some long extra inning games played between the Mets and Phillies over the years:

- August 14, 1962 - The Phillies defeat the Mets 3 to 2 at the Polo Grounds in 15 innings. An error by Marvelous Marv Throneberry ignited the Phillies rally.

- October 2, 1965 - In the second game of a double header at Shea Stadium, the Mets and Phillies couldn't score a single run in an 18 inning affair that was suspended by curfew. The game was never completed because it was so late in the season and neither team was in contention. All in all the Phils and Mets played 27 innings that day. Let's play three!

- September 10, 1970 - The Mets defeat the Phillies 3 to 2 in 14 innings at Shea. Tommy Agee scored the winning run on a Cleon Jones triple.

- June 19, 1971 - In a 15 inning game,  The Mets win over the Phillies 6 to 5 when Donn Clendenon hit a walk off home run at Shea Stadium.

- August 1, 1972 - The Mets win the first game of a double header at Shea Stadium against the Phils. The game went 18 innings and was decided when Cleon Jones singles in the winning run. This is the second time that the Mets play 27 innings in one day against the Phillies. This time both games were completed.

- 1975 - The Mets play in three 12 inning games against the Phillies, losing 2 of the 3 played.

- April 15, 1982 - the Mets are defeated in 13 innings by the Phillies at Shea. Charlie Puleo gave up a grand slam home run in the top half of the 13th. The final score, the Phillies 8, the Mets 4.

- April 12, 1986 - In Philadelphia, the Phillies win 9 to 8 in 14 innings. The Mets had scored 1 in the top of the 14th but the Phillies countered with 2 in their half for the win.

- August 11, 1994 - A day that lives in infamy amongst baseball fans. It's the last day of play before the baseball strike that ends the season. And the Mets lose a 15 inning game in Philadelphia by the score of 2 to 1. Ricky Jorden singles in the winning run. Our old friend Lenny Dysktra is on base for the Phillies.

- March 31, 1998 - The earliest season opener in Shea Stadium history sees the Mets defeat the Phillies in 14 innings. Brian McRae scores the loan run on an Alberto Castillo pinch hit base hit.

- September 11, 2004 - The Mets lose 11 to 9 in thirteen innings at Shea Stadium. David Bell hit a 2 run homer off of Vic Darensbourg (who?).

There were quite a number of 10, 11, and 12 run games over the years between the two clubs too.

Hopefully Alay Soler can give the bullpen some rest tonight...
