Congratulations to the 6 Mets selected to the All Star team. It’s the first time since 1986 that the Mets have had this many players on the team. And in case you have been stranded on a desert island with Tom Hanks, the Mets players are David Wright, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, Paul Lo Duca, Tom Glavine, and Pedro Martinez. There is also the possibility that Billy Wagner could join the team depending on a final vote in of several different players. It was also revealed that David Wright will compete in the Home Run Derby on Monday evening. (In my opinion, this has become bigger then the game itself).
I think it’s great that all these Mets will be on the team but one thing I have got to say is that if the All Star game is going to count, meaning it determines home field advantage for the World Series, then the fans should no longer vote. Let’s face it, the fans voting is as fair as the last two general elections for president. A fan can not only vote at the ballpark but now they can vote up to 25 times on the internet, and that’s per e-mail account. So if a person wanted to, they could just keep creating email accounts and vote until their fingers fell off. It’s simply a popularity contest.
If the All Star game is going to mean something then the players should be the ones who vote. Who better than the players to pick the best players amongst their league to try and win the home field advantage? Personally, I would rather see baseball keep the All Star game an exhibition, drop the home field thing and let the fans continue to vote.
